第二次世界大戦中の英語ニュースから

このニュースは、英語通信社（略称、英通社）が第二次世界大戦中に、スクール・ウィークリーとして出版していた英語雑誌からのものである。
日本は米英と戦争をしていて、英語は敵性語と見なされ、軍部からの抵抗が大きい中、英通社はこの雑誌を発刊し続けた。これを購読していたのは、戦争前には1万人に及んだというが、戦争が始まってからはどうなったのかデータはない。しかし、かなり多くの日本人が戦争中でも、日本の未来を信じ英語の学習を続けたことは確かである。また、このニュースを見れば分かるが、高校（旧制）や大学の入試問題が載っていることから、日本国としてもこの時点（個人的にこのニュースを所有しているが、それは昭和18年5月24日発行分まである）までは少なくも、英語を否定してはいない。実際には、海軍は兵学校において英語教育は続けたとも言われており、日本全体として英語を敵性語として学習を辞めたわけではなさそうだという点には、救われる気もする。

この雑誌は、通信教育用で全て郵送していたようである。中学が5年生まであったため、1年〜5年用まであり、夫々、PICTURE, ABC, PRIMER, JUNIOR, SENIOR(EDITION) と分かれていた。

　CLASH BETWEEN ENGLAND AND INDIA
Britain is now taking a severe measure of repression against the anti-British movement started by the Indian Congress Party. The Indian populace have risen in revolt against the British rule. But ardent and courageous as they are in their spirit of rebellion, an unarmed people cannot continue their resistance indefinitely, and without any outside aid it would hardly be possible for them to attain their objective. Now the only outside aid available in the present circumstances will come from Japan, when she decides to use her military power in India's favour.

さて、この後も記事をここに載せていく。私が記事をここに載せる理由は、純粋に英語学習の歴史の紹介である。このときの状況は、日本は米英と戦争中であったということ、日本の戦争プロパンガンダは大東亜共栄圏の構築ということであったということである。その実態は識者、歴史家などに譲るとして、庶民がこの戦争の中でどのように報道され、何に一喜一憂したかなどが、しかも英語のニュースで読みとれるということに、皮肉を感じる点もある。昭和17年に既に本土空爆が開始されておりながら、強気な論調には、まだ敗色濃厚とは誰も思っていなかったのか、知らされていなかったことをも読み取れる。そういうつもりでここに掲載するものである。

　WHAT SOLOMON FIGHTS MEAN
The Japanese Navy inflicted several losses on a reinforced American fleet in the second naval Battle off the Solomon Islands on August 27. The development of a second battle in the neighborhood of the Solomon Islands so soon after the Americans had suffered such terrific losses a couple of weeks ago, furnishes additional proof of the desperate positions of the Americans. Apparently, despite the cost, the Amerians are being forced by political as well as military circumstances to attempt some sort of a showing in the southwestern Pacific.

When you are told to write a composition on a certain subject, do not consult a book before writing unless you are obliged to do so. Consider first whether your subject really requires information that you do not possess. If you have not the necessary facts at your command, you must certainly acquire them.But in collecting material from a reference book be sure not to copy down phrases or sentences. If you do, they will be likely to stick in your memory and to appear at last in your writing which, in that case, will be not your own but some one else's.
