ネイティブのボキャブラリーは大体20,000ぐらい。これは日常使われるボキャブラリーで、これにあまり必要ではないボキャブラリーが10,000とか20,000とか上乗せされます。勿論知識人は、もっとはるかに多くが上乗せされます。Churchill元首相などは60,000個くらいあったとか言われています。しかし、我々は多分15,000から20,000覚えれば困らないと言われます。
日本の中学では大体2,000、高校を出て3,000、難関大学なら4－5,000のボキャブラリが必要だと言われています。難関大学合格者でも必要単語の１／３ですから、どれくらい日本人が英語が出来ないのかわかります。
