pick up the tabは（支払う）と言う意味だが、通常自分が払う必要がないものを代りに払うような場合に使う。Everytime I have dinner with him, he always makes me pick up the tab.（彼と一緒に食事をするときは、何時も勘定を払わせられる）尚、似た単語にtagがあるが、こちらは、「下げ札」の意味で、コンピュータ用語としても知られる。tagにもスラング的な使い方があり、「つきまとう」の意味がある。tag-alongは「つきまとう人」のこと。またtagには、「鬼ごっこ」の意味もある。 Tag!といえば、（捕まえた！）になる。
