＊buck=buckhorn knife(鹿の角のナイフ）＝次の番を示すのに使われたから、「責任」の意味となる。pass th buckとは、順番を次に回すことで、責任を回すこととなった。大統領のH.Trumanが、The Buck Stops Here.（最終責任はここにある＝申し送りはここで帰結）と言ったことが、有名。
