映画で覚える英語のスラングの使い方　151－170

スラング以外の普通の熟語もあります。文章を見て使い方を覚えましょう。

151．BUCK（２）：責任　pass the buck という熟語で、「責任をなすりつける」の意味。

Why do you always pass the buck? Don’t you know that everyone else is busy too? （どうして君や責任をひとになすりつけるの？皆が忙しいということがわからないのか）　＝ pass responsibility onto someone else and escape from one’s responsibilities

＊buck=buckhorn knife(鹿の角のナイフ）＝次の番を示すのに使われたから、「責任」の意味となる。pass th buckとは、順番を次に回すことで、責任を回すこととなった。大統領のH.Trumanが、The Buck Stops Here.（最終責任はここにある＝申し送りはここで帰結）と言ったことが、有名。

152. CRASH　：これも沢山の意味がある単語だが、ここでは「泊まる」の例を。

If you are drunk tonight, you can crash at our place. （もし今晩飲みすぎたなら、泊まっていってもいいよ）You have a place I can crash? （僕が泊まれるところある？）名詞で「泊まる所」の意味でも使われる。I think I know of a crash for tognight.（今晩泊まれそうなところを知っている） crashは予め計画して泊る場合は使わない。

153. think better of it : 「考え直す」　何か考えたことを、良く考えて思い直して止めること

She was tempted to retort, but thought better of it. （彼女は反発したい気持ちだったが、考え直してやめた）　これは、slang ではなく、普通の表現です。

154．DOPE: すごい、素晴らしいの意味　（反対のstupid person（名詞）の意味もあるので注意）

I just got this new computer, and it is so dope!

（たった今新しいコンピュータを手にしたところだが、これは凄いよ）

155. HUMDRUM：平凡な、退屈な

It was such a humdrum job that he quitted. （それは余りにも単調な仕事だったので彼は辞めちゃったんだ）

156. poop out (pooped out)：へたばる、疲れる

I always poop out right when I get busy.(私は忙しくなると、たちまち疲れる）　I am really pooped out. (僕は本当にくたばった）poopは他にも「情報」や「アルコール中毒になる」などの意味がある。

157. go bananas :　怒る、怒り狂う、（我を忘れる、興奮して大騒ぎするなども）

When they complained to me, I went bananas. (彼らが文句をつけた時に、僕は怒った）　Sorry,　I just went bananas for a minute. （すみません、少しの間我を忘れてしまった）結構良く使われている表現です。覚えていて損はない。

158. hit the road : 旅立つ、出発する

It’s getting late. I guess we can hit the road.　（もう遅くなってきたから出発しよう) hit the +名詞には他にも色々なスラング表現がある。　hit the books (猛烈に勉強する)、hit the bottle（痛飲する）、hit the hay(sack)(寝る）、hit the headlines（有名になる）、The test is next week. It’s time to hit the books. (テストは来週だ、そろそろ猛勉強しよう）、hit the spot (元気が出る、良い考え）That cup of coffee really hit the spot. （そのコーヒーで本当にリフレッシュ出来たよ。）

159.  on the double  直ちに、大至急

Get a fuel car out here on the double.　給油車を急いで手配してくれ。映画「speed」より

160．pick up on～　～に気付く

He called you a wildcat before. I didn’t even pick up on it. The bastard’s got a camera right in your face.

あいつはさっき君のことをワイルドキャットと呼んだ。俺はそれにちっとも気が付かなかったが、あの野郎は君の目の前でカメラを回しているんだ。映画「speed」より

161．from minute one 最初から

He can see the whole bus. He’s been playing me from minute one.

あいつはバス全体が見えている。最初から俺をからかっていやがるんだ。「speed」

162．tape 　テープに録音する、録画する

“Get those cameras to stop taping. “”Every stop taping now. “

「(報道)カメラに録画撮りをやめさせろ。」「みんな、今は録画撮りを辞めてくれないか。」「speed」

163．get mushy 　感傷的になる、でれっとする

“You’re not gonna get mushy on me, are ya?” “Maybe, I might.”

「おセンチになって私の事好きになったりしないわね」「そうなるかもね」「speed」

164．tend to 面倒を見る、世話をする

Annie sits in an ambulance while a paramedic tends to her.

アニーは救急車にのって、医療助手が彼女を手当てしている。「speed」

165．copy　はっきり理解する

Westbound five-oh-one. We have police orders to return to the station. Westbound five-oh-one. Do you copy?

西回り501．警察からの命令だ。駅に戻れ。西回り501．聞こえるか。「speed」

166. pop for something : ～をおごる、ごちそうする

I will pop for your dinner, don’t worry about it. （夕食を僕がご馳走するよ。きにするな）

Let’s have some beer. I will pop for it.

167. catch some Z’s ：居眠りする　cop some Z’s, cut some Z’s ともいう。

I am so tired today. I can’t wait to catch some Z’s. （今日はとても疲れた。居眠りせずにはおれないよ）

Stop for a while and try to cop some Z’s. (ちょっと止まって、少し寝てみたらどうだ）

168. (real) RIOT：　面白いやつ

Man you are a real riot, just kidding you aren’t funny at all. （へい、おまえは面白いやつだぜ、って冗談だよ。面白くもなんともないぜ）

Her joke was a real riot. （彼女の冗談は本当に面白い）

169. up in the air: 決まってない　 

I’m still up in the air about whether to ｍarry him or not.

(私は彼と結婚するかどうかまだ決めていないわ。）

170．WACKO：おかしい人、crazy person または、おかしい行為

They say that the new section manager is a wacko　（新任の課長はおかしいって噂だ）
